Dickens was born on February 7, 1812 in Portsmouth, on the southern coast of England. His father,John Dickens, was a naval clerk who dreamed of becoming rich and his mother, Elizabeth Barrow, aspired to be a teacher and school director. But the family’s financial situation had grown worse because John Dickens used to spend money dangerously beyond the family’s means.
Consequently, John was sent to prison for debt in 1824, when Charles was just 12 years old.
After a few months Dickens's father was released from prison and Charles was allowed to go back to school. At fifteen his formal education ended and he found employment as an office boy at an attorney's, while he studied shorthand at night.
Chareles Dickens was known as a great novelist. He wrote a lot of short stories and has famous pseudonym Boz.
In 1842 he travelled with his wife to the United States and Canada, which led to his controversial American Notes (1842) and is also the basis of some of the episodes in Martin Chuzzlewit. Dickens's series of five Christmas Books were soon to follow; A Christmas Carol (1843), The Chimes (1844), The Cricket on the Hearth(1845), The Battle of Life (1846), and The Haunted Man (1848).
Charles Dickens died on June 9, 1870 of a stroke. He was buried in Poet’s Corner at Westminster Abbey. Thousands of mourners came to pay their respects at the grave and throw in flowers.
Charles John Huffam Dickens (7 February 1812 – 9 June 1870) was an English writer and social critic. He created many perfect works that everyone can enjoy, and by the 20th century critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories enjoy lasting popularity.
